Skywind: Morrowind reenvisioned! 2024

Project Overview

WHAT IS SKYWIND?

The Elder Scrolls Renewal: Skywind is a non-commercial, fan made modification for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that seeks to merge the amazing world of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with the enhanced graphics and capabilities of Skyrim's engine.[1] The original game developers, Bethesda Softworks, have given project volunteers their approval.[2] All original game assets, including textures, music, quests and gameplay, are being redesigned.[3] The remastering team involves hundreds of volunteers in artist, composer, designer, developer and voice acting roles.

When you audition, please:

  • Do not slate your audition.

  • Record your combat lines at a lower gain than your spoken lines.

  • Submit with unedited audio. We need to hear the raw audio to gauge if your submission meets our audio quality standards.

  • If you want feedback from us, join our Discord server and post your audition in our #auditorium channel.

Successful auditioners will be notified via PM, with further instructions (typically, to get in touch with someone on our Discord server).

Want to help in other ways?

If you want to help out the project in other ways (concept art, 3D modelling, writing, implementation), please visit our website's volunteer page and send us an application!

  • Casting now On Hold

We've reached a point where pretty much all roles are fully cast in terms of the scripts that are available to assign now.

In light of this, we've decided to pause casting while the Writing team works on getting the last scripts ready. For a while now, we've been having to turn voice actors away, or put them on hold, and this system isn't ideal for anyone - VAs having to wait for months for a role, or us reaching out and them no longer being available.

As such, casting is now paused. You are absolutely welcome to continue auditioning, but for the foreseeable future, we won't be casting new voice actors. Successful applicants will be contacted via DM if and when spots become available, but note that this may be many months from now.

Orc

Orcs in Morrowind, while not actually stupid, certainly have their intelligence allocated to parts of their brain other than those used for verbal communication. While they excel at war tactics and crafting, their tribal nature still shines through. For many, if not most, Cyrodillic (English) is used clumsily and their limited mastery of the language leaves other races assured of their stupidity. Orc voices should be deep and perhaps a bit gravelly. Tough. Delivery can even be a bit choppy and abrupt. Your voice should also account for the fact that orcs have huge tusks that get in the way of their speech. This would make 'S' sounds difficult. Esses would sound instead like Sean Connery esses, a little like 'sh'.

Oh, all right. I'm a necromancer. Look. I'll teach you a spell, but you'll have to keep your mouth shut about this. I can teach you the Summon Ancestral Ghost spell, or, if you prefer, I can teach you Summon Skeletal Minion.

Dunmer
open
Unpaid

We have a particular need for female Dunmer voices - if you know someone who might be interested, please let them know!

The Dunmer accent can range from modern “posh” British accents to the Trans-Atlantic accent from early Hollywood. To keep from sounding distinctly North American, Dunmer voice actors are asked to avoid the rhotic R.

In general, Dunmer should sound wise, even in their youth. They live in a harsh land, and their lifespans are very long - they are a pragmatic people and venerate the wisdom of their elders from even from a young age.  They should speak in a precise manner, clear and articulated, taking the time to think through exactly what they mean to say as they say it.

Female Dunmer will have a mid-range to low pitch. A rough/gritty tone may be present, similar to   low level of mild, continuous vocal fry. They are somewhat more masculine in tone, with some huskiness. Female Dunmer will sound mature overall, and don’t sound younger than mid-30’s in age. The most true to the original Morrowind would sound very mature, with a slight wavering, shaky quality--not from lack of confidence, but rather just normal aging of the vocal cords--still sounding wise, prideful, and confident in disposition. They won’t ever sound young, like children or teenagers.

For males, the rasp is the most important thing.  If you can throat sing, and apply this rasp on top of throat singing, that is the ideal Dunmer voice. That's how Jeff Baker does the voice.

Note: Female Dunmer do not need the rasp that males use.

  • [Dialogue Male] - I have long believed it was a mistake to turn from the old gods. Perhaps Azura is with you after all. And perhaps not. I will tell you that I've spoken with Dagoth Ur. He promised me the same thing. That he will drive the foreigners from our lands. But I am not one to ignore opportunity, nor am I one to be troubled by rubbing two sides of a coin. If you are one of your word, I am your ally. I will tell Velanda Omani and Nevena Ules to support you as Hortator of House Hlaalu. -------------- [Dialogue Female]- Perhaps I can help you with the Oracle's riddle. Nammu, or 'no-name,' is a cavern in the wildlands of Sunna Guradan. Its east-facing entrance is west-north-west from the Daedric ruin Yansirramus. At the heart of the cavern is a great high chamber, flooded, with a central spire rising from the water. The water around the bottom of the spire might be the ring of darkness from the Oracle's vision.

  • [Combat taunts] - You n'wah!- Die, fetcher.- This is the end of you, s'wit.- You will suffer greatly.(Combat taunts: Ordinator)- You cannot escape the righteous!- You will pay with your blood!

  • [Taking damage] - Hurragh!- Groan.- AAAIIEE.- Umpfh.

Redguard
open
Unpaid

Redgaurds of Tamriel come in three flavors, but nearly all of them in Morrowind will sound 'American Black'.

Most members of the Yokudan Diaspora you would find in Morrowind have been influenced by the language and culture of the Imperials, which themselves sound more 'American'. African language intonation influenced by American dialects becomes as American Black. Think Logan Cunningham (Rucks from Bastion), Erik Dellums (Three Dog from Fallout 3 and Nazir from Skyrim), James Earl Jones as Mufasa. Or for women, American Black women like Oprah Winfrey, Etta James or Angela Bassett. Most of the Redguards encountered in Morrowind should have this accent.

We are currently not casting for the other two types of accents. Should roles for these accents open up, they would be: First, seafarer folk that stick nearer the Altmer, Breton, or 'noble' Imperial influences would pick up accents like the Creole accents of the Caribbean. Second, the nobles of Hammerfell would sound West African, like Ghana.

  • [Dialogue Male] - An Argonian named Okur in Hla Oad has asked for our aid. This devout follower of the Nine is sensitive to spirits of the otherworld, and she says she is being visited by the ghost of a murder victim. The guards can't do anything in such cases. Go and speak with Okur. Here's some gold for expenses. If possible, discover the nature of the crime, and bring justice to the wronged spirit so it can be laid to rest. ------------ [Dialogue Female] - Just recently, a dwarven spirit appeared in my shop. I don't know why it's here, or what it wants, but it scares off all of my customers. This guard won't do a thing about it; he thinks it would be bad luck to disturb the spirit. If you can get rid of the thing, I'd be very grateful.

  • [Combat taunts] - I have the upper hand!- I'm not giving up that easily.- Am I good or what?- It's about time I had some fun!

For Imperials, there are two flavors, but the most important aspect is that they are very 'clear' and authoritative voices. They may be proper 'British' in emulation of the Aldmer upon which their culture is heavily based, or more 'American', but their voice holds authority. Like super-hero voice.

  • [Player dialogue Male] - A conspiracy to kill the emperor? Thank the Divines you found this evidence. Well done. And, it's good to hear you brought justice to those would consider such a course of action.- I thank you, and the Emperor himself may personally thank you when he hears of this. You have done a great service to the Empire. Long live Uriel Septim! ---------- [Dialogue Female]- Ho there! You're one of Hrundi's band, aren't you? I can spot you a mile off. I've been waiting for some time now for assistance, but I suppose you will have to do. I'm on a quest to root out a "great beast" dwelling within these ruins. You and I will explore together.

  • [Combat taunts] - I've trifled with you long enough.- You will die where you stand!- Come on! Fight!- Surrender now and I might let you live!

They stole all of my jewelry, but most importantly, they got two family heirlooms of mine. They've been in my family for years. There are currently NO male Altmer roles available, but we expect to have 1-2 roles open in the future. If you audition now, you will not hear back until our Writing team has completed those roles.Additionally, there are very few female Altmer roles remaining.

High elf males should sound like Benedict Cumberbatch. A deep, rich voice with British inflection. Not commanding in tone, but with an air of superiority and condescension to others.

High elf females should sound like Cate Blanchett. Most of them need a mature and regal tone with a posh British accent.

If you want to buy from me, you have to barter. If you want a little advice -- free to new customers -- just ask. Would you like to hear about our most popular potions? Our most popular scrolls? ---------- [Dialogue Female] - Fara, the proprietor of Fara's Hole in the Wall, and Dinara Othrelas, the cook over at Llethri Manor in Ald'ruhn, have an annual cooking contest. Fara wants an edge in this year's contest, and she's hired us to steal Dinara Othrelas' copy of "Redoran Cooking Secrets," which should be somewhere in Llethri Manor.

Ashlander
open
Unpaid

Ashlanders should follow the same accent guide as regular Dunmer, but with a few changes.

Whereas “House” Dunmer avoid the rhotic R, Ashlanders should have a lightly rolled R instead. Their Cyrodilic (English) recitation should be choppier to help distinguish them from the other Dunmer. Depending on how good they are with Cyrodilic (English) their accent may even sound Dothraki or Mongolian.

Speaking native Dunmeri words, the choppiness is gone from Ashlanders, and should become something more akin to Dothraki, or Polish (many of our Ashlander Voice Actors are Polish - so this is just a thing that happened).

Ashlander females need to crank up the elderly wisdom vibe to 11. Ashlander males will sound dismissive, suspicious, and cold when speaking to non-Ashlanders.

Dunmeri Pronunciation: Foremost, the vowels. There are 6 major vowels, and they're almost universally spoken in the same way:

  • A as in father ( ä )

  • E as in egg ( ĕ )

  • I as in pig ( ɪ )

  • O as in home ( ō )

  • U as in rule ( u )

  • Y as in very (or any word ending in 'ly' - sort of an ee sound) ( ē )

Dunmeri vowels are to be pronounced discretely from each other, as in Japanese. Karaoke, for instance, maintains the a and the o in the middle as distinct sounds - same for the Dunmeri word 'Oad', meaning harbor. It's not just a long O sound (like toad), it's long-O and then A as in 'father' - two syllables. Double vowels of the same type are to be held for a slightly longer duration - again as in Japanese. The Dunmeri alcoholic beverage 'greef' is not to be pronounced with a long 'E' sound, but rather E as egg. Just hold the vowel sound a bit longer.

Three exceptions to these rules are: An "ay" together will have a long "A" sound (as in "say", ā ), rather than separate ah-ee sounds; an "ai" together will have a long "i" sound (as in "die" or "sigh", aɪ ), rather than separate "ah-ih" sounds; and an "i" at the end of a word (excluding when it is part of an "ai" pair) will have a long "e" sound (similar to real-world names like Bobbi, ē ). Other exceptions would be explicitly noted in your script (e.g. Gnisis: KNEE-sis).

Dunmeri consonants are the same as English consonants for the most part, with a few quirks. Double 'L's you can pronounce just like regular 'L'. The name Llethri would be normal 'L' sound, 'e' as egg, 'th' as 'thistle', 'i' as pig.

Please read both the English and Dunmeri lines below. The Dunmeri translations are provided for context, but should not be read.

En oas edur neif aln am as bivri osuhn ean shotelaka ghar isk malfurdigh bal. Ju'okor oas homa el, as fahraj ebahr udirif opumelu. (Translation:We have no other option. He’s an outcast, just like us. That is where they found two hunters dead, their flesh white and bloated by the corprus. That is not a place where a wise man would go. [Dunmeri] - Ohn ur'ish eshtik sanaachlan? Ash Vampires are not actually Vampires, but powerful sorcerors of House Dagoth. Unlike their Dunmer and Ashlander counterparts, they do not speak with the signature rasp. They are wise, highly intelligent, and highly powerful beings of almost demi-god like status. They each have a unique personality and more details wil be given upon casting.
All Ash Vampires are male, and require a masculine voice. They will typically have an RP British accent, but there is flexibility for a few to be slightly more American sounding. There is also flexibility on pitch, while many will have a deeper tone, some can be a bit brighter depending on the character. For all Ash Vampires, there should be a tone of nobility.

Ascended Sleepers are distorted half-Dunmer, half-beast abominations created through magic Sleepers are intelligent, aggressive and dangerous to all but the most experienced of travelers.

Voice Type:
RP British preferred, though an articulated American accent is ok too. No rasp is needed for this role. Slow, wise, clear, articulate. Confident to the point of condescension - they believe themselves to be enlightened, on another plane of consciousness, and any who have not achieved this are as low as insects and worth just as much of their time. They speak with an almost noble, regal air.

SFX Note: Voice should sound somewhat etheral, incorporeal, disembodied, almost ghostly. Should be a bit creepy, in a subtle uncanney valley sort of way.
